The incident took place around 115 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 15, at the station located at 805 Main Street, said Stratford Police Capt. Frank Eannotti.
Based on surveillance video, during the robbery, the suspect, Matthew Russell Walsh, of Wethersfield, caused approximately $2,000 dollars in damage to the business and stole $300 dollars worth of merchandise, Eannotti said.
By the time police arrived, Walsh was long gone. But detectives were able to get a vehicle description, and around 9:15 a.m., Stratford detectives observed Walsh's vehicle, a red Pontiac Sunfire and attempted to stop the car, Eannotti said.
When officers attempted to stop Walsh, he refused to stop and officers broke off the pursuit.
A short time later with the assistance of Fairfield Police, the vehicle was located in Fairfield. The Fairfield Police K9 Unit assisted with a track and Walsh was found hiding from under some bushes, Eannotti said.
Walsh was taken into custody without incident.
He was charged with reckless endangerment, possession of drug paraphernalia, interfering with an officer, larceny, burglary, engaging police in a pursuit, and reckless driving.
He is being held on a $100,000 bond.
